MAY 7 thru MAY 30 ARTISTS and “A SHOW IN LIVING COLOR”: May 10-11: Paintings by local artists paired with Flower Arrangements by the San Carlos Garden Club

Monday, April 1st, 2013

The San Carlos Garden Club, an affiliate of the California Garden Clubs Inc., and Palomar District Inc., has been an active organization since July 7, 1962.  On June 26, 2012 they celebrated their 50th Anniversary.

One of their community projects is a flower show, A Show in Living Color, which is the creative pairing of paintings by local artists and floral designs by club members. This event will be staged in the Community Room of the San Carlos Branch Library, May 10th, 10:30 am to 5:00 pm and May 11th 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

This FREE show is the San Carlos Garden Club’s gift to our community.

Active Members participating this year are: Ruth Cassady, Jo Cormier, Genny Deutsch, Dorothy Driscoll, Myrna Hines, Rita Kuehn, Bea Lorentz, June Mason, Peggy Mattthews, Joyce McManus, Marj Myers, Shirley O’Connell, Susan Pappert, Gayle Regan, Terry Seaburg, Carol Sebastain, Carol Lynnet, Ann McDonald, Tana Wilson, and Tim Kelly.

There will be Flower Arranging Demostrations on May 10 at 1:00 pm, and on May 11 at 11:30 pm.

Artists participating in the 2013 “A Show In Living Color” and SHOWING THEIR WORKS FROM MAY 7 thru MAY 30 are:

Loretta Deczynski: The flowers of California are most often the centerpiece of her paintings, but she also enjoys figures and animals. Several of her paintings have won awards in juried art shows. Go to lorettaart.com.

Barbara Stewart: While living a short distance from the water in Corona del Mar (Newport Beach), the colorful sea, spectacular sunsets, and dramatic cloud formations fascinated her and shaped her desire to capture these on paper.

Dixie Sampier: Whether Dixie is working in oils, pastels or watercolors… whether from a photograph or on location… whichever technique or method she may employ, you will enjoy her refined skill and unique, creative expression.

Judi Burnett: Following Picasso’s lead, she has been experimenting in the use of bold colors and abstract designs using acrylics. Most recently she has been experimenting with pastels.

Hazel Ross: Hazel was born on the island of Aram off the west coast of Scotland where she spent her early years in a fishing/farming community. It was there that she developed the love for nature and its beauty which has influenced her painting ever since.

Jean Waters: Originally known for her cat portraits, Jean also carves her own stamps. Using her own oriental papers and stamps, she creates collages which she paints and decorates with acrylics so that the artwork is both archival and original.

MARIA LOUISA DOMINGUEZ: June 4 thru July 3

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Maria Louisa Dominguez is our featured artist from June 4 thru July 2.  Maria was born in El Centro, raised in Calexico, and graduated from Imperial Valley College with an Associate Degree in Business.  Maria is an accomplished watercolor and pastel artist as well as a photographer.

After retiring from her professional career in 2002, she moved to San Diego. Maria says, “It wasn’t until I moved to San Diego that I discovered my attraction to art, and began experimenting with my abilities.  I took several photography classes at Grossmont College, many watercolor classes at Cuyamaca College, and pastel classes at Lakeside Adult Education.

“Since 2002, I have traveled to many countries throughout the world, including Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South America.  Many of my subjects for painting and photography are taken from these destinations.

“I owe a great deal of thanks to some of my instructors, particularly, Dr. Marie Ramos, Cuyamaca College, who perfected my watercolor skills; Barbara Peterson, who gave me confidence in pastel painting; my brother, Jimmy Dorantes, a professional photographer, who honed my photo skills; and my husband Gil, who is always there to give me encouragement and support and help with my internet skills..”

Maria has chosen not to have an Artist Reception, but please show her how much you have enjoyed her works by voting for your favorite for the “People’s Choice Award.”

JULY 9 thru AUGUST 1: Beverly Shults, Diana Schlueter, & Luz Shepard

Monday, April 1st, 2013

We have three wonderful new artists to show off their works in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library from July 9th thru August 1. They are Beverly Shults, Diane Schlueter, and Luz Shepard.

BEVERLY SHULTS: A Colorado native, Del Cerro resident, and flower shop accountant, Beverly has been surrounded by natural beauty her entire life.  Joined by a friend following retirement, she enrolled in a watercolor class.  Three years later, her sister encouraged her to try pastels which have now joined watercolors and acrylics as the favorite mediums Bev uses to share the beauty that surrounds her.

DIANA SCHLUETER:  As a youngster influenced by the flowers and landscape of the rural New Jersey countryside, Diana’s room was filled with brightly colored paint by number and crayoned pictures.    As an adult, she enhanced her artist skills and passion for vivid colors through private and continuing education classes.  She hopes you enjoy her work in oils, watercolor, pastels and mixed medium and find it inspirational.

LUZ SHEPARD:  Born and raised in Bolivia, South America, Luz loved to draw but didn’t begin her art studies which include drawing, photography, jewelry design, ceramics, watercolor, acrylics, Oriental Brush (Sumi-e), and pastels, until her children were in college.  During the last 12 years, she has specialized in pastels and Oriental Brush (Sumi-e).  This technique evolved in the 5th century from Chinese calligraphy and was brought to Japan in the 12 century by Zen monks.  It is not only an Asian painting technique but also a form of spiritual relaxation therapy that is now popular world-wide.

Come and meet these charming ladies at their artist reception on Saturday, July 20, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library.

VOTE MONTHLY FOR the “PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD”

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Come join in the fun!  You will find a box hanging on the wall with the art work in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library in which to place your vote for your favorite piece of art being displayed by that month’s featured SCFOL artist(s).  The painting or photograph chosen by the the greatest number of votes will be declared that month’s “PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD“.  It will then be displayed in the main library during the following month.  The artists will love your feedback, and we will all get to enjoy the art a little longer.

Remember, a portion of the sales of the artwork displayed in the library is donated to the SCFOL and supports the purchase of books, equipment and programs for the library.

Out of space in your home?  We would like to encourage art patrons to consider purchasing a piece of our artists’ artwork and donating or loaning it for a period of time to be on display in the library, school, your place of work, a medical facility, nursing or retirement home , church, or any other place of your choosing.  This is a win-win for everyone.  The artist makes a sale, more of the public views their work, the library receives a donation, and you may get a tax deduction.  Just another way to volunteer!

All of the artists and the San Carlos Friends of the Library thank you for your patronage.  Please come into the Community Room of the San Carlos Library and enjoy the beautiful artwork on display there!
