SCFOL YEAR IN REVIEW
Wednesday, July 20th, 2011The San Carlos Friends of the Library would like to thank all of our members and patrons for your support during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.
We would like to share with you some of the programs that are brought to you through the Volunteer work and Members of the San Carlos Friends of the Library, a non-profit chapter of the Friends of the San Diego Library.
1) SCFOL is totally responsible for the Monthly Used Book Sales that occur on the first Saturday of every month.
2) SCFOL underwrites the Youth Summer Reading Program at the San Carlos Library.
3) SCFOL underwrites and judges the Annual Youth Essay Contest.
4) SCFOL offers guest speakers on a variety of subjects on the 4th Wednesday of most months. Schedule may be found on this website under SPEAKERS.
5) This year, OASIS daytime programs were added to the mix on the third Friday afternoon of most months. Schedule may be found on this website under SPEAKERS.
6) SCFOL invites local artists to display and sell their art in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library. A portion of their proceeds is donated to the Library. Please stop by monthly and vote for your favorite work of art. A box is on the wall for you to caste your “People’s Choice Award” vote. The monthly favorite will then hang in the main library for an additional two months for all to enjoy. Artists are listed on this website.
7) Yoga classes are offered FREE on Fridays. Check the calendar on this website.
8) Special employment and financial and debt reduction classes were offered FREE.
9) SCFOL supports the Library staff with volunteers.
10) SCFOL publishes a bi-annual newsletter and maintains this website. The newsletter will be mailed in the fall (September) and again in the Spring (March or April).
11) SCFOL purchases new edition rental books ($0.25/day) for its members that are then donated to the Library’s collection. A list of these books can be found in this section on the website.
12) SCFOL supports all City-wide Library activities including the “One Book, One San Diego” selection.
13) SCFOL supports the San Diego Library system through the “Mission Statement” of the Friends of the San Diego Library.
This fiscal year, ending June 30, 2011, the San Carlos Friends of the Library spent $5914 in support of library programs, $939 in direct equipment purchases and additional moneys through the matching equipment fund, and $6939 in the direct purchase of new titles or through contributions to the matching book fund. This totals $13,789 in direct contributions to the San Carlos Branch Library.
In addition to the 2205 hours donated by the SCFOL Board members, our 128 member volunteers gave over 5322 hours of there time and talent to make your library even better. That’s a total of 7527 hours which equals 3.75 full time emloyees. A big THANK YOU to all of you who work so hard. It is really appreciated by the library staff and its patrons.
We can always use more MEMBERS, and VOLUNTEERS especially for the book sales. Membership fees are nominal, but help tremendously. Due to the recession, we lost members, but doubled our volunteer hours in 2011. This year, we are looking to double our membership. If you have enjoyed any of the activities that the Friends provide, we urge you to join today. Check out the Membership page for an application form and rates. Volunteers may leave their name and phone # with the library staff for the SCFOL President or Membership Chair. When considering a new piece of art for your home or office, check out the artists who have shown their works at our Library–and mention SCFOL.
Thank you for visiting our website and hope you continue to view us here for the latest updates on “What’s Happening” at the San Carlos Library.

Thursday, March 17th, 2011SCFOL now has a Historian–Joan Hayes. If you have any San Carlos memorabilia such as pictures or stories of past events, please pass them along to Joan. You may leave them for her at the library. Please leave your name and contact information in case she has questions about the material.
