On February 7, the San Carlos Friends of the Library held its award ceremony for the local winners of the 15th annual student Writing for Literacy Essay Contest sponsored by the FSDPL, San Diego Public Library, and the San Diego City Schools. Winners were announced by FSDPL President and area chairperson, Ann McDonald, who presented winners with a $25 gift card to Barnes and Nobles. Certificates of participation were presented by Council Member Marti Emerald and her area representative, Mary Ann Wallace. All of our winners chose the topic, “If I could save only one book in the whole world, I would choose…..”
Pershing Middle School eighth grade winners were, Christie Dey, Irene Mai, and Allison Westerman. Christie’s essay will go on to compete in the city-wide contest. We thank their teachers, Linda Carroll, Brad Endicott, and Jillian Ryan.
Awards also went to PHHS tenth graders, Sara Kronfeld Simpson, Brigitte Temple, and Abigail Groff. Sara’s essay will also compete city-wide. Thanks go to their teachers, Chad Miller, and Linda Good. City-wide winners at each grade level will be announced on May 3, at the Balboa Park Club. Winners will each receive a monetary award. The student whose essay is chosen as Best Overall will also receive a $5oo award in memory of our own San Carlos residents, Jack and Carolyn Winer, under whose leadership this annual contest began.
We wish to thank all of the students who entered, their parents, teachers, and school staff, as well as the volunteer judges who read and evaluated this year’s 55 entries. They are, Flora Hogins, Inez Jacobson, Ann McDonald, JoAnne Prescott, Barbara Woodhall, and Dan Yelvington.
