GET FIT @ YOUR LIBRARY: June thru November

A special program for all ages runs thru November. Topics cover nutritional-mental-physical-financial health. NEW: Stretch & Tone and Mat Yoga classes are being added to our Children’s Yoga, and adult Chair Yoga & Meditation classes. CLICK HERE for the complete schedule for June. Get this program started off right on June 7 @ 12:00-2:00 pm with your own personal BIOMETRIC TESTING: BP, HR, Ht, Body Scanner (which include body mass index, weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass percentage, resting metabolism kcalories, body age, and visceral fat), and Glucose.

We will have four coaches on hand to review your results briefly and encourage you to attend session 2 ( June 20 @ 12:00-2:00) for a more comprehensive strategy plan. Each participant will walk away with their results, where those results fall within target, borderline, or high risk categories, and recommended next steps, including following up with a physician.

MAY 18, 9:30-3:00: 1st Annual San Carlos Library Spring Craft Fair

On Saturday, May 18th, from 9:30 to 3:00 pm, over 20 talented San Carlos library patrons will display and sell their wonderful crafts. Tables will be set up in the Community Room and outside. Table fees will be donated to the Friends of the Library while crafters will have an opportunity to earn money from their labors. SCFOL will also have a table where you will be able to purchase crafts suppied by our crafters and snacks. All SCFOL proceeds will support the library. This is the first time we have tried this as a fund raiser, but the idea has already received enthusiastic support from our knitting and beading clubs, and from several of our artists. RENTAL COLLECTION TITLES FOR SCFOL MEMBERS & Non-MEMBERS

Rental Collection Titles: These books are located in a freestanding bookcase just inside the library’s door. These titles can be rented by dues-paying SCFOL members for only $0.25 per day, OR by non-members for $0.50 per day. If you are not a SCFOL member, join NOW. Applications can be found on this website or in the library. You may buy a “RENTAL” card from a library staff member at the circulation desk. Members will be asked to show their current membership card. Non-members will be asked to fill out an information card with their name, address, phone and email address.

Essay Contest Winners Announced

MAY 2, 2013, CONTEST UPDATE: Congratulations to the San Carlos Library’s 16^th Annual City-wide Library Student Essay Contest Grand Prize Winners Caroline Beail, 4^th grader at Dailard Elementary and Bailey Pinto, 10^th grader at PHHS. Each received a new laptop computer from Computers 2 SD Kids, $75 from FSDPL, and mementoes presented by the San Diego City Council and FSDPL. We also had two prize winning semi-finalists: Anngely Leeds from the Learning Choice Academy, and Isabelle Pinto from Pershing Middle School. All of the submitted essays were impressive. We congratulate the students, parents and teaching staffs and thank the contest sponsors for their support. The author of the best overall essay was awarded a special prize of $500 in memory of contest originators, Jack and Carolyn Winer. Jack was a Past-President of FSDPL &SCFOL. Seventeen years ago San Carlos resident Jack Winer envisioned the essay contest as a vehicle to encourage young people to read, write, and think. We think his goal was accomplished. Thank you Jack!

The essays covered many diverse and interesting books –from Hunger Games to The Bible–making the job of choosing “the best” out of 94 great essays not an easy task for this year’s judges who were Flora Hogins, Patricia Woodall, Dan Yelvington, and Barbara Woodall. Our thanks go to them and a special cheer to Barbara who also chaired this year’s contest. We also wish to thank our corporate sponsors: Friends of the San Diego Public Library, San Diego Public Library, San Diego Unified School District Library Media Teachers, KPBS, Lloyd pest Control, and Computers 2 SD Kids (C2SDK).

All 94 San Carlos participating students received participation certificates. The eleven local winners also received an impressive commendation certificate from the S.D. City-Council (thank you Councilmember Scott Sherman and our area representative-presenter Jon Staab) and a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble (thank you Friends).

The Main Branch Library will reopen at its new location on Saturday, September 28, 2013. The Central Library’s collecti0on will be unavailable during the closure. Up-Cycling Your Wardrobe and other Fashion Tricks

Up-Cycling your Wardrobe for ages 8 to 108. This program starts July 15. Bring your gently used clothing to the library starting on July 15^th. On August 15^th come take what you can use. Whatever people don’t take will be given to charity.
