We would also like to THANK Eric Chamberlin our part-time Youth Services Librarian. He has been filling in as Acting Branch Manager while we awaited the appointment of a new full time branch manager. Eric has done a great job of wearing both hats. We hope he will continue on as our Youth Services Librarian. In this capacity he has enhanced the programs for our teen patrons.

The San Carlos Friends of the Library would like to thank all of our members and patrons for your support during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010. During the year, $34,390 was raised for our library through donations, book sales, memberships and other means.

We would like to share with you some of the programs that are brought to you through the Volunteer work and Members of the San Carlos Friends of the Library, a non-profit chapter of the Friends of the San Diego Library.

1) SCFOL is totally responsible for the Monthly Used Book Sales that occur on the first Saturday of every month.

2) SCFOL underwrites the Youth Summer Reading Program at the San Carlos Library.

3) SCFOL underwrites and judges the Annual Youth Essay Contest.

4) SCFOL offers guest speakers on a variety of subjects on the 4th Wednesday of most months. This year, OASIS daytime programs are being added to the mix.

5) SCFOL invites local artists to display and sell their art in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library. A small portion of their proceeds is donated to the Library.

6) SCFOL supports the Library staff and the San Carlos Library building.

7) SCFOL publishes a bi-monthly newsletter and maintain this website. The newsletter will be mailed quarterly starting with the Sept, 2010 Edition.

8) SCFOL purchases new edition rental books for its members that are then donated to the Library’s collection.

9) SCFOL supports all City-wide Library activities including the “One Book, One San Diego” selection.

10) SCFOL supports the San Diego Library system through the “Mission Statement” of the Friends of the San Diego Library.

This fiscal year, ending June 30, 2010, the San Carlos Friends of the Library spent $1245 in administrative costs, $2363 in support of our fund raising projects, and the rest of the funds have been or will be used to cover current and future needs of the library.

In addition to the 997 hours donated by the SCFOL Board members, our member volunteers gave over 2300 hours of there time and talent to make your library even better. That’s a total of over 3300 hours. A big THANK YOU to all of you who work so hard. It is really appreciated by the library staff and its patrons.

We can always use more MEMBERS, and VOLUNTEERS especially for the book sales. Membership fees are nominal, but help tremendously. We are looking to double our membership this year. If you have enjoyed any of the activities that the Friends provide, we urge you to join today. Check out the Membership page for an application form and rates. Volunteers may leave their name and phone # with the library staff for the SCFOL President or Membership Chair. When considering a new piece of art for your home or office, check out the artists who have shown their works at our Library–and mention SCFOL.

Thank you for visiting our website and hope you continue to view us here for the latest updates on “What’s Happening” at the San Carlos Library.

          Gateway On The Rosebud

David Stanley took up his brush and began painting after a long career in Law Enforcement. Born in Oklahoma, he traveled extensively throughout the U.S., but his favorite spots were in the South and Southwest. He now calls Southern California “home”. During his travels, he marveled at the wide open spaces, rapid running rivers, waterfalls, giant redwoods and rich pine forests. He saw towering mountains drop into barren deserts. As he took pictures, he tucked away the emotions felt when first seeing these vistas. Now, years later, he has put his brush to canvas. The result is the recapturing of an awe inspiring moment in nature.

Pacific Storm Building High Desert Flash Flood

When asked, David’s favorite artist of all time is Norman Rockwell, but he categorizes himself as an “Impressionistic Landscape Artist” and his work “Impressionscapes”. Specializing in Western Landscapes, he paints with acrylics on canvas, depicting remembered and discovered views of nature whilst adding personal feelings and stories. ”His high, snowy mountain crags sweep down to broad prairies and desert vistas. Crashing waters and dripping foliage change to hidden forests revealing breathtaking sunlit secrets. Lonesome roads and abandoned fields recall memories of long ago.”

     Feather River A Lazy River

David’s works are displayed in homes throughout the country with many admirers in Texas. He has chosen not to have an artist reception, but his works will be on display in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library from July 5th thru August 6th. Enjoy them daily while in the library with your children during the Summer Reading Program, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite. Look for “The People’s Choice Award” voting box hanging on the wall amongst the paintings. You can see more of David’s work on his website: http://fineartamerica.com. He can be reached at papo826@cox.net. He is a member of the Foothills Art Association.

Tova has always been fascinated with any type of artistic endeavor, but lacked formal training until 1982. Since then she has attended classes in charcoal, pastels, acrylic, watercolor, pencil drawing, and mosaic. These classes include instruction by Aviva Rhamani, UCSD, Marie Wardell, Jennifer Broomberg, Nancy Poisson at French’s Art Studio, and privately with Betsy Brown.

Her Biology major afforded Tova experience in drawing technically correct objects, but this left out the emotional side of art. She now allows herself to be passionate about her subjects and scenes. At this point, she says, “I feel I will be an art student for life. I have eclectic pieces including abstract, themes from nature, plants, animals, and my subconscious expressions.” Currently, her main medium is acrylic, but her earlier works include a mixed media of acrylic, watercolor, pens, markers, and pencil crayons. Tova expresses her love of art: “I have a hunger to learn more and more so my art can develop to different levels of perfection.”

Come and meet Tova at her Artist’s Reception to be held in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library, on Saturday, August 21st, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Be sure to vote for “The People’s Choice Award” when you visit the art displays in the Community Room during regular Library hours.
