Friday, June 1, 2:00: Screening of the movie We Are Dad. This screening is part of the One Book One San Diego Program.

We are Dad is a documentary film by Michael Horvat.

The Lofton-Croteaus are an amazing family; Headed by Roger and Steven; their contagious charm and humor has been key in coping with the rigors of raising Frank, Tracy, Bert, Wayne & Ernie. The dads also cope with the pressure of America’s most overtly anti-gay climates in its history;

4 of the kids have HIV/AIDS, 3 are of mixed race, 2 are from a backwoods Oregon Cult, and 1 of the kids, Bert, is at the center of one of the most hotly contested legal battles of this decade – Gay adoption.

Bert was born HIV positive, but at age 3 he sero-reverted, meaning he now tests HIV negative.
The result is that Florida, who deemed the parents good enough to foster a sick, unwanted child, considers the dads inadequate to adopt that
same, now healthy, child. Why? Because of Florida’s discriminatory complete ban on Gay Adoption.

The film chronicles the family’s struggles during the horrendous early years of the AIDS Pandemic and sets the fight for equality within a historical framework as Lofton v. The State Of Florida reaches all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In an era when gay adoption is poised to be the wedge issue in the next elections, they prove that perseverance, love and a finely-tuned sense of irony do overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.

Saturday, June 16, 9:30-11:00 am. Volunteer Training. If you are interested in volunteering at the San Carlos Branch Library, please join us for this training. You must be 14 years old and willing to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours. If you have any questions about volunteering at the library, please contact the Branch Manager, Rita Glick at (619) 527-3430.

There are so many venues now available to organizations to “help get the word out,” that the San Carlos Branch Library is in need of a Publicity Assistant. This volunteer would help create our own branch’s email database of patrons who would like up-to-date reminders of programs and events that are happening at our branch library. They would then send out monthly event fliers and an activity newsletter to this database using Constant Contact and other social media venues.

If you are interested, please call Managing Librarian, Rita Glick at 619-527-3430, or drop by the library to chat with her about this position.

At the Balboa Park Club on May 3rd, multi-talented writer, scientist and musician, PHHS tenth grader Sara Kornfeld Simpson, was named one of four tenth grade grand prize winners in the 15th Annual city-wide Student Writing for Literacy Library Essay Contest. This contest is sponsored by the Friends of the San Diego Public Library, San Diego Public Library, San Diego Unified School District Library Media Teachers, KPBS and Lloyd Pest Control. In her essay, Sara wrote, “The power of books to liberate the mind, hold back the darkness, and bring hope and enlightenment to readers is the timeless message of The Book Thief,” the book she chose if only one book in the world could be saved. Sara was also one of the Essay Contest’s city-wide prize winners as an eighth grader.

In addition to her literary skills, she is also this year’s winner of the San Diego Science Fair’s top award, and will represent San Diego at the CA State Science Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May. She won an Award for Excellence in Science at last year’s ISEF.

Also a serious musician, Sara is principal flute in the SDYS Sinfonia Orchestra and principal oboe in the SDYS Symphony Orchestra. She has given solo performances and won music awards at many local venues. In June, she will perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in the National Honor Concert Band—one of 10 flautists chosen in the nation. We are fortunate to have Sara residing in our community, join her family and teachers in the pride they have in her many accomplishments, and congratulate her on her latest achievements.

 ABOUT THE BOOK:

”Venus has always been associated with the feminine in astrology and in culture, yet little emphasis is placed upon the wisdom aspect of the planet. With the cycles of Venus we are given insight into the unfolding of wisdom within ourselves and society, especially with the cycle of Venus’ inferior conjunctions – the so-called 2nd order cycle of the planet. In her timely and much-needed work, Firegazing, Gail has brilliantly outlined the meaning and import of these cycles and the deeper meaning of a planet that often only receives a passing notice in astrology, yet is so intimately connected with our own lives and what it is to be human. When Venus passes across the face of the solar orb, we are given opportunity to gaze into the very fire of the soul itself. Well done, Gail ” – Malvin Artley

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Gail Dimitroff holds a PhD in Leadership and Human Behavior. In 1980 she chaired the County Commission on the Status of Women and is an activist for women and women’ issues. She has taught courses in Women in Management and Stereotypic Images of Women in Media. Gail studied short story writing with Paul D. Peery who for many years held a writer’s workshop in Coronado, California. She has won awards for short story and article writing with the San Diego Writer’s and Editor’s Guild. Her work with Mr. Peery and her interest in the short story form paved the way for the writing of her Memoir, Mande, which falls into the genre of literary memoir. She has lectured extensively on the Memoir form and has presented at Border’s etc. She is a member of the National Penn Women’s Association. As a business consultant in the field of continual process improvement Gail taught, published and lectured in North and South America. Gail considers herself to be a spiritual peacemaker and holds group meetings at her home in La Mesa, CA, at the time of the Full Moon for world peace. She is an active participant in AAUW, VOW, and a graduate of LEAD San Diego. She was one of the first students at the San Diego College for Women, now the University of San Diego. Gail was named the 2011 philanthropist of the year by the San Diego Women’s Foundation. Gail’s interest in Cosmology, Astrology and Esotericism has peaked since she became a faculty member of Morya College-an on-line school where students study the Ancient Wisdom. There she teaches Esoteric Psychology and Astrology as well as a study of the Deva Kingdom. At her home, she teaches a class in Esoteric Astrology and Soul Dynamics. –This text refers to the Paperback edition. ***THE ABOVE INFORMATION WAS TAKEN FROM OTHER WEBSITES ABOUT THE BOOK.
