Have you always wanted to join a book club, but didn’t know how, or they all met at locations too far from your home? Then this is for you!
Designed with an open format, the club will meet in the Community Room on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 1 p.m., and will include a variety of books—each one to be chosen by club members. Wanting the club to be more than simply reading and discussing, our hope is to invite authors, correlate crafts, and even compare a book’s movie if possible. The February 9th book selection is The Reading Promise, by Alice Ozma. The March 8th book selection is How To Be An American Housewife, by Margaret Dilloway.
Extra copies of the books can be found at the library listed under “Book Club,” so pick up a copies today, and come ready to discuss them. Even if you can’t get them read in time, you are still welcome to participate.
HAPPY READING!
We would like to thank the 55 local students, their parents & teachers, who submitted essays to the annual Friends of the LIbrary essay contest. They are now all being carefully read by the judges, and local winners will be announced on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:30 p.m., at a special awards ceremony to be held at the library.
Area winning essays will then move on to compete in the city-wide contest, where they are eligible to win additional prizes ,at their respective grande level,or the grand prize of $500.
City-wide winners will be announced in May, at a ceremony at the Balboa Park Club. Good luck to all.
Mary Holman and Cynthia Griffin who organize the Saturday morning STORY SWAP, have started a new progam, OPEN MIC NIGHTS, at the San Carlos Library. Beginning Tuesday, October 18 at 6:00 pm, and continuing every third Tuesday, they invite you to come to the library and tell your tale, recite your poetry, sing a song, play your instrument, show us your dance routine, or try out your latest comedy routine. This program is open to everyone-all ages and genre. The only requirement is that your material must be “family friendly.” Come and showcase your talent.

Long time local resident and teacher, Carole Wilson, is the OASIS coordinator for the SCFOL. If you have any favorite topic that you would like to see presented at the San Carlos Library, please contact her at OASIS@sancarlosfriendsofthelibrary.org. We are offering programs on the 3rd Friday of the month, totally underwritten by SCFOL, and FREE to the public. Please check the “Speaker’s Schedule” on this website for class details.
OASIS “is a national education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and older through lifelong learning and service.” OASIS offers programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service for a nominal fee. However, programs presented at the San Carlos Library are fully underwritten by SCFOL and are FREE to the public. You may register for these and other OASIS classes on line at www.oasisnet.org, or at the library. Non-registered participants will be seated on a first come, first served basis as space permits following the seating of registered guests. We would love to have you stop by and join us. Your SCFOL Memberships and continued support of the SCFOL monthly Used Book Sales enable us to offer these FREE programs. Have you joined or renewed your 2011 SCFOL membership yet? We have lots to offer you. Click on MEMBERSHIP for more information on how you can join.
The San Carlos Friends of the Library would like to thank all of our members and patrons for your support during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.
We would like to share with you some of the programs that are brought to you through the Volunteer work and Members of the San Carlos Friends of the Library, a non-profit chapter of the Friends of the San Diego Library.
1) SCFOL is totally responsible for the Monthly Used Book Sales that occur on the first Saturday of every month.
2) SCFOL underwrites the Youth Summer Reading Program at the San Carlos Library.
3) SCFOL underwrites and judges the Annual Youth Essay Contest.
4) SCFOL offers guest speakers on a variety of subjects on the 4th Wednesday of most months. Schedule may be found on this website under SPEAKERS.
5) This year, OASIS daytime programs were added to the mix on the third Friday afternoon of most months. Schedule may be found on this website under SPEAKERS.
6) SCFOL invites local artists to display and sell their art in the Community Room of the San Carlos Library. A portion of their proceeds is donated to the Library. Please stop by monthly and vote for your favorite work of art. A box is on the wall for you to caste your “People’s Choice Award” vote. The monthly favorite will then hang in the main library for an additional two months for all to enjoy. Artists are listed on this website.
7) Yoga classes are offered FREE on Fridays. Check the calendar on this website.
8) Special employment and financial and debt reduction classes were offered FREE.
9) SCFOL supports the Library staff with volunteers.
10) SCFOL publishes a bi-annual newsletter and maintains this website. The newsletter will be mailed in the fall (September) and again in the Spring (March or April).
11) SCFOL purchases new edition rental books ($0.25/day) for its members that are then donated to the Library’s collection. A list of these books can be found in this section on the website.
12) SCFOL supports all City-wide Library activities including the “One Book, One San Diego” selection.
13) SCFOL supports the San Diego Library system through the “Mission Statement” of the Friends of the San Diego Library.
This fiscal year, ending June 30, 2011, the San Carlos Friends of the Library spent $5914 in support of library programs, $939 in direct equipment purchases and additional moneys through the matching equipment fund, and $6939 in the direct purchase of new titles or through contributions to the matching book fund. This totals $13,789 in direct contributions to the San Carlos Branch Library.
In addition to the 2205 hours donated by the SCFOL Board members, our 128 member volunteers gave over 5322 hours of there time and talent to make your library even better. That’s a total of 7527 hours which equals 3.75 full time emloyees. A big THANK YOU to all of you who work so hard. It is really appreciated by the library staff and its patrons.
We can always use more MEMBERS, and VOLUNTEERS especially for the book sales. Membership fees are nominal, but help tremendously. Due to the recession, we lost members, but doubled our volunteer hours in 2011. This year, we are looking to double our membership. If you have enjoyed any of the activities that the Friends provide, we urge you to join today. Check out the Membership page for an application form and rates. Volunteers may leave their name and phone # with the library staff for the SCFOL President or Membership Chair. When considering a new piece of art for your home or office, check out the artists who have shown their works at our Library–and mention SCFOL.
Thank you for visiting our website and hope you continue to view us here for the latest updates on “What’s Happening” at the San Carlos Library.
SCFOL now has a Historian–Joan Hayes. If you have any San Carlos memorabilia such as pictures or stories of past events, please pass them along to Joan. You may leave them for her at the library. Please leave your name and contact information in case she has questions about the material.
